Assumption in the 1950s

These eight photos display an interior of Assumption that most of us have never seen and provide a glimpse into what worship was like in the 1950s.

Much is different, yet much is the same.  Starting at the top, the angels holding the coat of arms of the Servite order are painted in color with a light blue background.  As your eye moves down, you will notice a differently patterned ceiling over the original altar, with three symbols of the Eucharist.
The most striking feature in this photograph is the lighting. Assumption once had two rows of lights in the archways, as well as chandelier stands in the nave.

This image allows a better look at the effect of the lights and the main altar, as well as the side altars.  If you zoom in, you can also see the Sanctuary Lamp hanging near the center of the aisle above the altar.

Fascinating overhead photo from the 1956 Diamond Jubilee Mass.  There is much detail to appreciate here.  For this Mass, a special throne was erected for Cardinal Stritch.   If you look to the far left of the altar, you will notice the pulpit that was removed in the late 1960's.

A view of the 1956 congregation.  The original stained-glass windows depicted symbols of our faith, such as a dove and ark, a shield and triangle, the letters Alpha and Omega, the sword as a symbol of the power of God, and others.

The original altar had four reliquaries, or busts, of four of the Servite Saints.  Left to right: St. Philip Benizi, St. Bonfilius, St. Juliana, and St. Peregrine.

The pulpit from which the sermon was delivered and the Epistle and Gospel were read on Sundays.  One of the original stained-glass windows is visible behind. In this photo Fr. Gaetano Del Brusco, OSM, is leading a prayer service.
