Sunday, August 15, 2010 : Parish Homecoming Picnic - 2010Our annual Parish Homecoming Picnic will take place on our Parish Feast Day, The Feast of the Assumption, Sunday, August 15. The Homecoming Mass will be celebrated at 12:15 p.m., followed by a picnic under tents in front of the church until 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 01, 2010 : Saint Peregrine Vigil LightsIn September, 1993, Fr. Gus Kulbis, Pastor of Assumption, inaugurated the new votive light stand at the Shrine of St. Peregrine, the cancer saint. Several banks of votive lights were made available to those who wished to have a candle burn for their intention for an entire year. A bronze plaque was engraved with the name of the person for whom the candle was burning. The suggested offering at that time for the yearly candle was $300.00. About a year later, the upper church was closed for an extended period of time for repairs and redecorating, and Fr. Kulbis extended the original period of time for which the candle was to burn by another year. Since the mid 1990’s, as far as we can tell, there has been no effort to contact the families who made the yearly offering. At the same time, the use of the shrine and the vigil lights has grown significantly. So, here’s what we are going to do. If you are from one of the families who requested a yearly candle and wish to maintain that candle for that same intention, you are welcome to renew for a year with an offering of $300.00 or more. The remaining plaques will be removed September 1 and the candles made available to all. Sunday, September 05, 2010 to Sunday, May 29, 2011 : Is the RCIA for someone you know?A survey conducted in 2008 found that 34.2 million people in the United States had no religious affiliation. While some of these people said they left the religion in which they were raised over issues in their churches or their church’s teachings and wanted nothing to do with any religion, and others said they did not believe in a higher power, and still others were committed to following their own spiritual path and were not interested in churches, a surprising 33% said that they were open to the possibility of becoming affiliated with a church or religion at some point in the future. Helping people decide where they belong is one of the functions of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). RCIA is a process that gives adults time to consider what it might mean to become part of the Catholic community at Assumption Church. Participants bring their life experience to the questions they have about the deeper meaning of life and get a chance to look at their questions in light of scripture and the church’s teaching tradition. There is no obligation to complete the program for those who choose to begin it. RCIA is for adults who have never been baptized, for those who were baptized in another Christian denomination and want to explore becoming Catholic, and for those who were baptized Catholic but never made their first communion and confirmation. We meet on Sunday mornings from September through May. For more information call Fr. Joe or email jchamblain@assumption-chgo.org Saturday, September 11, 2010 : Children’s Religious EducationAssumption Parish participates in a collaborative religious education program for children in grades K-8, held at the former St. Joseph School, 1107 North Orleans Street.
