September 07, 2008: RCIA Starts September 7th
RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the way
older children, teens, and adults become full members of the
Catholic Church. RCIA is for those who have never been baptized,
for those who were baptized in another religious faith
and now want to explore becoming Catholic, and for those
who were baptized Catholic and never made their first communion
and confirmation. Sessions begin at Assumption on
Sunday morning September 7 and run through early May. The
sessions consist of a period of reflection on the Sunday Scriptures
and input on Catholic beliefs. No commitment is made
at the front end to follow the process to completion. For more
information, contact Fr. Joe (312-644-0036) or email
jchamblain@assumption-chgo.org.
September 07, 2008: Religious Education at Assumption Parish
Assumption Parish, as part of Deanery 2-D, shares in a cooperative Children’s Religious Education Program with area parishes. Assumption parishioners, while retaining their membership at Assumption, are invited to enroll their children in Religious Education classes with our neighbors to the north—Saint Joseph Parish.
Opening Day for Children’s Religious Education is Sunday, September 7, 2008. Classes meet on Sunday mornings at Saint Joseph School, 1065 N. Orleans Street. Class begins at 9:30 am and dismisses at 10:50 am.
For more information call Father Doyle or call the Religious Education Office at Saint Joseph Parish 312-787-7174.
September 08, 2008: Baptism Preparation
Our next preparation session for parents( and, if possible,
godparents) of infants to be baptized is Monday, September 8
from 7:00 to 8:15pm at the Rectory. The preparation session
is for first-time parents and for those who have never before
attended a baptism preparation session. Infant baptisms are
normally celebrated at 1:15pm on the second and fourth Sundays
of the month or during Mass on the first Sunday of the
month. Call the rectory to register: (312) 644-0036.
September 11, 2008: Little Rock Scripture Study
Originating in the Diocese of Little Rock and found to be an
excellent way for Catholics everywhere to learn more about
the Bible and how to live its truths more effectively, Little
Rock Scripture Study will be returning for a second season at
Assumption this September 11. Little Rock combines private
prayer and study, group discussion, and input by leading contemporary
scripture scholars. Our program this fall is a ten
part series on the Gospel According to Mark (Most of the
Sunday Gospels next year will be from Mark). -- For more information, contact Verna Reddington at scripturestudy@assumption-chgo.org or call Fr. Joe at (312) 644-0036.
September 21, 2008: Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows at Basilica Parish
On Sunday, September 21 at the 10:30am Mass, we will
be celebrating our Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows at
our Basilica Parish. We are opening our 135th Anniversary
Year of the beginning of the Parish in 1874. Please
join Bishop Francis Kane, all of our parishioners and
our special guests of the Chicago Fire Dept. who saved
our Basilica Church in 1984. We will have refreshments
in the Parish Hall following the Mass. Your intentions
will be remembered at all of our Masses.
Peace and Prayers,
Fr. Chris, OSM, Pastor
October 11, 2008: Blessing of Marathon Runners
The Chicago Marathon is October 12. Yes, it makes access to Assumption more difficult that Sunday morning; but the event does a lot of good for the world. Last year over 7,000 charity runners collectively raised over $10.1 million for organizations around the globe. If you or any of your friends or relatives are participating in the marathon, invite them to the 5:00 Mass at Assumption on Saturday October 11. We will offer a blessing for runners during the Mass—praying not only for their safety and stamina during the race, but also that they continue to carry with them a spirit of generosity.
