Servite Community at Assumption

Father David Brown was born and raised in Chicago. After high school he entered the Servites and was ordained in May 1948. He remained at St. Joseph Seminary, Elgin until 1952 when he was assigned to establish a novitiate and seminary of Our Lady in Riverside California. He held the office of novice master until 1962 when he was appointed pastor of St. Philip Benizi parish in the area of the Cabrini-Green project in Chicago. In 1966 he had a one year assignment at Mt. Carmel Parish in Denver and then assigned to the formation program of the Servites at St. Louis University. At that time he received a master’s degree in Religious Education which he later utilized as a teacher at Holy Cross High School, River Grove, Illinois. Subsequently in Detroit he served in the Archdiocesan Religious Education Office for three years. After a sabbatical which took him to Texas, Wyoming and Washington D.C., he was assigned as an associate at the Servite parish in Carteret New Jersey, St. Joseph. While at St. Joseph he was asked to help establish the Office for Black Catholic for the Metuchen Diocese. In the 1990 he was assigned as associate pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows and in 1998 came to Assumption, retired and in residence. Throughout the time at Our Lady of Sorrows and then here at Assumption, he assists as an “advocate” for the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal.
