Rev. Michael Doyle, OSM: 12/31/2019

Father Michael Doyle was born in Chicago on 24 May 1938. He was educated in the Catholic Schools, kindergarten through post-graduate degrees. He entered the Order of Servants of Mary or pre-novitiate formation in 1956, the novitiate in 1957, and pronounced his first vows in 1958. He was sent to Our Lady of Benburb Priory, County Tyrone, Ireland for Philosophy Studies. He returned to the United States in 1960 and attended Loyola University, Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy.

He was then selected to study theology at the Servite Fathers International Theological Faculty the “Marianum” in Rome. While in Rome he earned the S.T.B. and S.T.L. degrees and a Diploma in Mariology .He was ordained a priest on April 19, 1965 at San Marcello Church in Rome. Upon his return to the United States he was assigned to the faculty at Servite Seminary where he taught freshmen and sophomore Religion and Latin. Among his students was a young seminarian named John Fontana.

In 1966 he was assigned to the faculty of Mount Senario College. He taught theology, philosophy, and professional education courses. He served as Acting President of Mount Senario College for 13 months.

In 1970 he then returned to Chicago, residing at Catholic Theological Union and serving as the Servite Regent of Studies. He also attended Loyola University in Chicago and earned M. Ed. Degree with a specialization in Educational Administration and Supervision.

He was named associate pastor of Saint Domitilla Church in 1971, during which time he continued as the Servite Regent of Studies and also joined the Hillside IL volunteer fire department. In May, 1974 he was commissioned a Chaplain, Captain in the United States Air Force Reserve and was assigned to the 928 Tactical Airlift Group, billeted at O’Hare International Airport. In June 1974 he was named Pastor of Annunciata Catholic Church on Chicago’s far southeast side and where he remained for eight years. During those years, besides parochial duties, he was involved in Marriage Encounter, Engaged Encounter, Christ in Others retreats and introduced Christ Renews His Parish at Annunciata. He also taught Fire Department Administration and Management at the Chicago Fire Academy for the City Colleges of Chicago. During these years he maintained his affiliation with the Air Force Reserve and was promoted to the grade of major. In 1982 he was elected to the Servite Provincial Council and moved to the Provincial Residence in Berwyn IL. He divided his time between Provincial Administration and the Servite Development Office.

In 1984 he moved to Our Lady of Sorrows Monastery, Chicago, where he was elected Prior and undertook the management of the monastery’s complete renovation and restoration. The “new look” monastery was show cased to the local friars for the celebration of Epiphany, 1985. In 1986 Father Doyle was offered the opportunity to enter active duty with the Air Force and he did so in February 1987. During his years of active duty he was pastor of three military parishes at Columbus AFB MS, Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque NM, and at Soesterberg AB, the Netherlands. His last five years of military service were spent as a Chaplain Personnel Officer at the Air reserve Personnel Center in Denver. He retired from the Air Force in the permanent grade of colonel on 1 June 1998.

After a six-month sabbatical spent in Ireland and Louvain, Belgium, he was appointed associate pastor of Seven Holy Founders Parish in Affton MO in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. On 12 Jan 2000 he was named the pastor of Seven Holy Founders. He has served many years on the Board of Trustees of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and is currently a member of the Servite Fathers Provincial Finance Council. He was named the pastor of Assumption Church (Illinois Street) in the Archdiocese of Chicago on 30 June 2006.

He retired as pastor of Assumption June 30, 2009.
