Community Outreach

A healthy parish must always have a missionary spirit, extending its love beyond its walls and the needs of its own members. Assumption has been an active participant in HELP ministries, which provides a number of different programs to aid the poor and homeless. Assumption has supported relief efforts in Haiti and has worked in partnership with the Catholic prison ministry. Our Young Adults Group participates in service projects on a regular basis. In addition to our institutional commitments, many members volunteer with various charities and service organizations around town. They invite you to join them. Listed on this webpage are some of the outreach programs recommended by our parishioners.

The Hush Opera Co, which performs regularly at Phil Stefani’s Restaurant at Huron and Rush, was joined by Assumption’s own John Eskola for a special concert Sunday afternoon October 3. The concert , sponsored by the Servite Secular Order at Assumption, was held to benefit the Secular Order’s Mission in Haiti, which was severely damaged in the January, 2010 earthquake.

Blessing of Holiday Greeting Cards at Thanksgiving Day Mass. Assumption parishioners are writing notes of thanks and sending cards to service personnel and to military veterans who will be in military hospitals at Christmas time, as part of Pitney-Bowes/American Red Cross "Holiday Mail for Heroes Program."

Thanksgiving Day Blessing Of Christmas Cards

Heavenly Father, on this day of feasting, family, and togetherness, we ask you to watch over and protect those who are far from family and home this holiday season. We ask you to extend your compassionate care to our service men and women, to our veterans, and to their families, who through sacrifices past and present enable us today to enjoy the fruits of this earth in such abundance and use your many gifts in freedom. We ask you now to bless ( ) these greeting cards intended for our service personnel and our veterans who will be spending Christmas in far-away places and in military hospitals and veterans hospitals throughout our land. Protect us from insincerity as we write these cards and all the cards we write at Christmas. May every greeting we send be signed with love, friendship, prayer, and gratitude. May our celebration of Thanksgiving this day become a way of life for us every day. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assumption parishioners have been collecting soccer balls to support the good will efforts of one of their own, U.S. Army Captain Joseph Himpelmann, who was married at Assumption in 2006 and is now serving in Iraq. He is part of a task force that seeks not only to clear neighborhoods of enemy activity but to work with neighborhood kids, providing them with recreational activities and encouraging them to help keep their neighborhoods clean and tidy. Soccer ball diplomacy is helping change young Iraqis' attitudes toward Americans.
