Update: July 2025
Our refugee friends extend many thanks to our generous parishioners for their continuing dedication and generosity. Your prayers, funds and efforts are greatly appreciated. Assumption Parish has expanded the reach of its assistance through Catherine’s Caring Cause, an organization devoted to offering assistance to families who have sought refuge in the United States. CCC has connected Assumption with several families in need of our help.
The Refugee Assistance Project continues to provide rent and food support to Virginia Contreras and her 6 children.
One of the team members hosted an outing to the Chicago White Sox game for all seven of the Contrerases and 5 team members. It was a lovely afternoon at the ballpark and everyone enjoyed becoming better acquainted with our ‘adopted’ family even though the White Sox ended up losing.
Son, Emiliano, 6, who was undergoing treatment for leukemia is doing much better. The family is enjoying living in Chicago, learning more English and passing the school-free summer at the parks and local library.
Through Catherine’s Caring Cause team members have offered rides to families needing medical attention and assisted with the set-up of apartments for newly arrived immigrant families.
For the second year in a row, Assumption Parish has been happy to support the women and children of Bethany House by contributing funds to host a Mother’s Day party for the moms and kids.
Our team has joined a group of parishes with refugee assistance teams to consider joining forces to advocate on behalf of the immigrants and refugees living in Chicagoland.
There are many activities including assistance at free legal clinics, court watch personnel, preparation of apartments, hygiene kits, food supplies and other actions which require additional volunteers. If anyone is interested in lending a hand, please contact refugee@assumption-chgo.org

Assumption Parish has expanded the reach of its assistance through Catherine’s Caring Cause, an organization devoted to offering assistance to families who have sought refuge in the United States. CCC has connected Assumption with several families in need of our help.
For almost a year, our parish has been helping with rent and food expenses for Virginia and her six children who have come to the United States as humanitarian parolees. Son Emiliano, 5 years old, is being successfully treated for leukemia at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, driven to his appointments by Assumption parishioner volunteers. Happily, he has been cleared to attend school, which he enjoys. His treatment is ongoing like our parish’s support. Inspired by Assumption’s commitment to help immigrant and refugee families, Catherine’s Caring Cause has drafted dedicated drivers from Assumption to bring another immigrant family needing medical attention to the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab on a regular basis. Victoria and her husband are grateful for the transport of their three year old daughter Mya to her appointments.

Our Refugee Assistance Group is dedicated to serving families who need help. We welcome any and all participants and any ideas for projects to assist immigrants and refugees that you may wish us to undertake. refugee@assumption-chgo.org
Please continue to remember these families in your prayers and with your generous gifts which are paying rent and food costs and other assistance to the families. Donations may be made On Line here

Update: June 30, 2024
Our “adopted” family, having travelled to Chicago from Mexico last summer, has moved into a home in McKinley Park whose rent is being paid by our generous parishioners.
Four year old Emiliano has received a bone marrow transplant from his 6 year old brother and continues to be treated for his leukemia at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Members of our group are driving Emiliano and his mother to the medical appointments once or twice a week. They are so grateful for our help. More drivers are needed if anyone has time to help.
Babysitters are also needed at various times if anyone is interested. We are asking for donations to continue so we can help with food and transportation costs and babysitting if we can’t get enough volunteers.
This family of a mom and six children ages 2 to 12 are adapting to life in Chicago with the help of many volunteers. We hope to bring them on a few outings this summer and welcome everyone’s participation.
