Refugee Assistance 4/11/2026

“I WAS A STRANGER AND YOU WELCOMED ME” (Matthew 25:35)

For several years the parishioners of Assumption Parish have been supporting refugee families as they transition to new lives here in Chicago having been forced by violence, hunger, and other reasons to leave their homes. The Refugee Assistance team and the families we serve are so very grateful .

Generous parishioners have dedicated their time and talents to mentoring an Afghan family and two Mexican families in need of ongoing medical care for their children. When the wave of immigrants arriving on buses from Texas overwhelmed the city, Assumption parishioners showed up to feed those camped out at the 18th district Chicago Police station. When ICE began its rampage in Chicago, dedicated parishioners responded by providing legal services, immigration court watching and attending the weekly prayer vigil at the ICE facility in Broadview; to mention some of the ongoing initiatives.
There are many opportunities for service, advocacy and prayer that we encourage you to join. We also ask for your continued financial support.

The first family we mentored has settled happily in Muncie IN.

Virginia and her five children have transitioned into their McKinley park neighborhood and church and are striving for complete financial independence. Emiliano’s leukemia appears to be in remission! They enjoy our continued celebrations, outings and gifts.

Victoria and her family are struggling for financial independence while spending a great deal of time accompanying 4 year old Mya to the many medical appointments occasioned by her condition.
Our Refugee Assistance Team has resolved to continue to meet the needs of refugee and immigrant families as they evolve. The generosity of our parish is now being shared with:

Catherine’s Caring Cause, Catherinecareschicago.org, the organization that sponsored the two families we continue to mentor, as it offers ongoing support to recently arrived refugee and immigrant families.
Midwest Bond Fund, mibfc.org, which is a non-profit that provides bond money to refugees so they can be released to home and jobs while they await their immigration court hearings.

Victoria and her family as they transition to financial independence.
